I'm not a "knowledgeable 1911" collector...
and I don't have a collector's verifiable information if their asking price reflects the value realistically, but the deal seems to sound great, especially if the special engraving was done by Colt.
It's caught your eye, and maybe a call to Colt (with the pistol's serial number handy) might provide some good info for a buying decision.
Sure wished you had some photos as it must be a real "looker"!!!
Hawk, just my guessing here, but if it's authentic and all, the price they're asking could be rather low vs. what this pistol's real worth is. The total production numbers probably were minimal to say the least compared to Colt's special runs of pistols like their WWI repro, which is already fetching prices nearing $1000.
Myself, when I find something like your Hartford PD commemorative, I've come to be of the opinion that the price isn't so critical if it's a gun you just simply have to own.
