Please note that the forums in this category are to be used to ask questions or to show us pistols from these manufacturers. They can also be used to ask questions about the parts of a particular pistol from one of these manufacturers, as long as the question relates to the original parts.

  • If your pistol malfunctions and you want to ask for help on how to troubleshoot it, post your question in the "Gunsmithing and Refinishing" forum, not in this one.
  • If you want to ask questions about after-market parts, these questions should go in the "Parts - Grips" forum, not in the manufacturers forums.
  • If you want to ask questions about after-market magazines, these questions should go in the "Magazines" forum, not in these forums.
  • If you want to ask questions about holsters, those questions should go in the "Holsters" forum, not in these forums.
  • If you want to ask questions about conversion kits, those questions should go in the "Conversion Kits" forum, not these forums.
  • If you want to ask questions about which ammo to use with your pistol, those questions should be posted in the "Ammo" forum, not these forums.

Messages with questions for after-market parts, magazines, holsters, conversion kits, ammo etc. will be moved to the proper forum and a warning will be issued.

IMPORTANT: In Photo-threads, each post should contain at least one picture of your own. Quoting a previous post, does not make your post compliant with that requirement. Photo threads are NOT for chatting.

Officer frame, Commander slide mystery

Last year I obtained an Officer’s Series 80 Mk IV, serial SFxxxxxE, model 09180E. Although the box indicated a 3.5 inch barrel, the weapon had a high-gloss Commander’s slide with the 4.25 inch barrel. The gals at Colt made a great effort to come up with the weapon’s pedigree, but in the end all they could verify was that occording to their records, the weapon was shipped as a 3.5 inch barreled weapon.

After many months of e-mails and phone calls, here is what I found out from Lew Horton;

Dear Michael,
This gun was one of 125 Colts sold to us in January of 1997 from Colt.
They were originally ordered by a police department (hence the slide
conversion) who never bought them as they turned around and cancelled their order. The guns were then offered to Lew Horton Distributing (us) for
purchase. We then purchased the "cancelled" lot from Colt with the already
swapped slides. The guns were labeled used but actually were not. This
labeling (USED) is what Colt designated the guns as their order from the
police department was cancelled after production. Hope this helps you
out... and sorry again for this request slipping through the e-mail
"cracks"!!!

So it would seem that there may be another 124 Officer framed, Commander slid weapons from this run in late 1996.

Mike

That is an interesting find. Now you have a collector on your hands, and a nice one at that.

How unique! Mike, it would be great to see pictures of your Colt. Fantastic story--sounds like it was well worth the effort you went to in order to document it's history.

I've got one too!

And my dealer in Indiana told me the same story in 1997. Glad to hear someone else confirm it. My guy said the PD canceled the order because when they got the stainless guns they said "we wanted blue guns".

Here's mine...

I have had work done to mine by Novak. Novak low mount nite sites, hi-ride beavertail, carry bevel, bead blast finish. I love it, but feel free to tell me how stupid it was if you wish. I can take it.

Here is Copperhead1861's gun...

Copperhead's gun from Colt Picture thread. Looks just like mine did before I sent it to Novak.
