Smith & Wesson entered into an agreement with the government that most, if not all, gun enthusiasts would consider contrary to their interests. I'm not positive but I think Smith & Wesson management has changed and possibly the agreement had expired, but I'm not sure about it.
Anyway, Smith seems busy turning out new 1911's and other products. At this point I don't have any problem with Smith & Wesson. |

Smith & Wesson has changed ownership so many times it is hard to keep track, now American owned and under new management I am not aware of where they fall on gun control with the government but when they were previously British owned they make some deal with U.S. government in which earned them a contract for firearms for a lot of police departments across the country. As I recall, there were a lot of gun dealers who would not carry or sell Smith & Wesson firearms after this. As far as now there seem to still be some tainted by this, but Smith & Wesson still seems to have excellent sales.

As I recall, the agreement S&W made while under Brit management was with the state of Massachusetts, not the US govt. I don't recall the details, but it was all about the supposed problem of guns being marketed to criminals, and S&W was to sell only through distributors that took steps to reduce/eliminate sales to the wrong elements of society-- you know: folks-- the hoi polloi. In return for being an adjunct enforcer to the Masshole government's civilian-gun-denial project, S&W was dropped from the class action lawsuit then in progress, by which means certain politicians were trying to build their political resumes.
It all ended when the Brit owners (I forget the name) sold out, and the new (US) owners repudiated the agreement. Oh, and the courts flushed the lawsuit. ![]()
