Question
History of the Gold Cups

Could someone give a good detailed history of the Goldcup and National Match models. I aware the Gold Cup National Match (Series 70 and 80) that were produced in 70's. 80's, and 90's and the Gold Cup Trophy which started production in the mid 90's and are still produced today. I was wondering about the older models and a kind of chronology from the first National Match to the present. Anyone that has this breakdown could do us all a service and share their knowledge.

Thanks,

Chuck

hope this helps...

Have you tried this site?
http://www.sightm1911.com/index.htm

It has some history, but may not have the detail you want. I'll try and do some more checking offline.

I thought about offering a research service at one time because I have .45 Auto articles from American Rifleman since 1952. I have access to some Guns and Ammo magazines also. I could e-mail all of the article titles if anyone is interested. If copies of the articles are desired, charges would be minimal (why profit from friends)?

Piggly Wiggly,

Anything that you can come up with will be appreciated. Questions come up from time to time concerning the Gold Cup History. I just think that a real chronology would be good. If I can ever get time, I may just call Colt's and see if they can help.

According to Jerry Kuhnhausen's "The Colt .45 Automatic" Vol. 1, the .45 caliber National Match was introduced in 1933 and the Gold Cup National Match was introduced in 1957.

I had a 1969 National Match with the slotted trigger with overtravel stop, the Eliason adjustable sights, the 14 lb. spring, the tightened slide, throated and polished barrel, solid bushing and double diamond cocobolo medallion grips.

I never saw one with the words "Gold Cup" on it til the series '70 came out with the fingered bushing. My 1969 did have the words "National Match" on the slide.

Regards,

Rabbi
