Please note that the forums in this category are to be used to ask questions or to show us pistols from these manufacturers. They can also be used to ask questions about the parts of a particular pistol from one of these manufacturers, as long as the question relates to the original parts.

  • If your pistol malfunctions and you want to ask for help on how to troubleshoot it, post your question in the "Gunsmithing and Refinishing" forum, not in this one.
  • If you want to ask questions about after-market parts, these questions should go in the "Parts - Grips" forum, not in the manufacturers forums.
  • If you want to ask questions about after-market magazines, these questions should go in the "Magazines" forum, not in these forums.
  • If you want to ask questions about holsters, those questions should go in the "Holsters" forum, not in these forums.
  • If you want to ask questions about conversion kits, those questions should go in the "Conversion Kits" forum, not these forums.
  • If you want to ask questions about which ammo to use with your pistol, those questions should be posted in the "Ammo" forum, not these forums.

Messages with questions for after-market parts, magazines, holsters, conversion kits, ammo etc. will be moved to the proper forum and a warning will be issued.

Hello Everyone, and Please Help Me Pick MY First 1911

First of all, I would like to say hello to all, I am new to this forum, and I am happy I found it. That being said, I am going to be buying my first pistol, and of course I will be getting my favorite the 1911. I have very limited experience with pistols, I have only shot a glock 26 9mm, that my cousin had, but my love for 1911 started when I was about 12 and my friends Dad showed me his 1911 that he used in the Korean War, I knew then that I had to have one someday. Well that day hasent come yet, but its close. I need some advise first, I am looking at the Springfield Mil Spec 1911, the Taurus Pt 1911, and the Auto Ordnance 1911 Deluxe. Like I said I have limited experiance with pistols and would like some opinions on these modles, or if you know of another one under $600, that is good, by all means I am open to suggestion. Also, I will be ready to by one at the beginning of Feb, if you have a 1911 for sale or know someone that does, in like new (not abused) condition, Please email me bbrazierkendo@yahoo.com I live in WA, I'm not sure on what ID you need or how the sale of a firearm process works, but I can provide State ID and I am getting my Concealed Weapons Permitt in Dec. So any and all advise, or tips on buying are welcome. Thanks

Welcome to the Forum. I'm sure that you'll get some help choosing a 1911. There are many knowledgeable members around here.

My pick of those that you've mentioned would probably be the Springfield Mil Spec. I've never had one myself, but I've admired them at gun shows; and I've had good experiences with Springfields generally. You might also want to consider an Armscor/Rock Island/Charles Daly/SAM (all made by Armscor and sold under various labels). They have an excellent reputation. Check out the Armscor/Rock Island/Charles Daly/SAM.

Also, for someone brand new to handguns I'd recommend buying a new gun from a reputable dealer. A used gun can sometimes be tricky for even someone with experience to assess and evaluate. A used gun can have hidden faults that may be hard to detect. With a new gun from a reputable dealer, you'll have the new gun warranty.

Your CCW training should cover most of the legal issues associated with gun ownership and purchase. However, you need to know that you can't simply buy a gun from private party in another state. Such a transaction would have to be conducted through a federally licensed firearms dealer in Washington State.

Thanks Frank, I have seen the Rock Island Armory but knew nothing about them, I too admire the springfield Mil-Spec, it was the first one that really caught my eye when I began looking for a 1911

Welcome to the forum, New2Kendo!

I'd go with the Springfield. I don't have that model, but I do own three Springfield 1911s and three M1As all of which I've been happy with. Although I've never had a need for it, I've heard nothing but good comments about Springfield's customer service and warranty repairs.

I'd go with the Springfield Armory. Second choice would be the RIA

Thanks for the input, I'm going to take your advise and go with the, Springfield Mil-Spec, like I said I cant afford it now, with the holidays coming, but probably in Feb I will pick one up, I looked at a few other handguns like the Ruger P345, but I keep coming back to the 1911, it was the first handgun I remember seeing in person and holding, needless to say it left quite an impression
