Please note that the forums in this category are to be used to ask questions or to show us pistols from these manufacturers. They can also be used to ask questions about the parts of a particular pistol from one of these manufacturers, as long as the question relates to the original parts.

  • If your pistol malfunctions and you want to ask for help on how to troubleshoot it, post your question in the "Gunsmithing and Refinishing" forum, not in this one.
  • If you want to ask questions about after-market parts, these questions should go in the "Parts - Grips" forum, not in the manufacturers forums.
  • If you want to ask questions about after-market magazines, these questions should go in the "Magazines" forum, not in these forums.

Messages with questions for after-market parts, magazines, holsters, conversion kits, ammo etc. will be moved to the proper forum and a warning will be issued.

I for one can not figure out why people want a full lenght guide rod? It looks like a very fine pistol and I would be hard presses to pass it up if I found one priced right. I would change the flg 1st thing.

peccadilloes?

Ain't them known as "Texas speed bumps"? Seriously, I liked the write up. It was written in a "real world" way as tested by a "real world" person. As a fifty something mechanicly backgrounded person, I can appreciate the hand strength issues that Steve mentions. I too wonder why so many are sold on FLGR's, seems like a waste of time and materials. I've never owned a Para, maybe sometime down the road, after my Coltitis subsides, I'll pick one up!

Thumbs up

I've got four 1911's.... (Sorry John....)

Two with FLGR's, and two with the standard style.

I don't see any difference in handling or about anything else, except the slightly goofy disassembly for one of them.

What seems to happen, is that the extra weight keeps the muzzle flip down just a hair, and it gives the slide v.s. barrel bearing surfaces a backup on the guide rod.

One of these guns is a 4" Kimber Compact Custom. My take is that you almost have to use an FLGR, and sometimes some odd spring setups, to get the little ones to behave. I think we're stuck there.

(My PX745E - regular steel and painted midnight blue - has the short guide rod. Seems like the finish is solid and looks OK too.)

Regards,

Very well written review. Is the firing pin stop identical to the the EGW slide stop? You seemed to allude to that in your review.

I have a early SSP which is the the non-stainless version. Sorry but I couldn't wait at the time, I just wanted a Single Stack from Para. I can confirm the accuracy of Paras. Mine have been scary accurate when I do my part.

The wish list gets longer....

Take Care

Bob

Bob,
I alluded to the EGW firing pin stop, but I cannot confirm that the one in the PX745S is identical. The photos show a much more robust FPS than the one in my stainless Series 70. I would like to compare the Para FPS to one of EGW's, sometime, just to see.

Up to the time that I shot that pistol, I had never shot a one inch 25 yard group. I haven't since then, and I doubt that I ever will. But, it was a fantastic experience, and I really enjoyed testing that pistol. I'm glad that you liked the review.

It looks as if PO is using a firing pin stop which has a smaller curve at the bottom, than the standard stops we see. It's not as squared in its profile and the EGW one, but it's not the standard one either.

I fully agree with John's assessment of the firing pin stop used by Para-Ordnance. When I was test firing the PX745S, I was not firing my Colt's stainless Series 70 in a side-by-side comparison. Now, I wish I had. I DO know that the Series 70 torques when fired one-handed, and that the EGW firing pin stop is designed to reduce or eliminate this torquing of the pistol during recoil.

Although I can't definitively state that the PO PX745S had less felt recoil than my Colts, I CAN express that it was an extremely pleasant pistol to fire, and that my targeted groups attest to this.

Enjoyed the artical on the px745s and also like the e-zine. Do not have this Para yet.
