I've just recently gotten into the 1911 game with the purchase of a new Dan Wesson Pointman 7... I love the gun and the sights installed by DW but was considering tritium sights for low light and because the old peepers aren't as good as they used to be. I also plan to get involved in IDPA soon as the weather breaks.
I spoke with an old detective a few days ago and he suggested only tritium on the front and leave the rear alone for contrast and quick acquisition in low light...any comments??
Any recommendations as to brand??
and does anyone know the dovetail deminsions on this gun?

I agree with the 'old detective', just have the light on the front. Its a lot quicker for shots in the dark...........anything that draws your eye to the rear, slows you down. Even my guns that don't have night sights, have the rear sight solid black.

I have no idea what dovetail dimensions are on the your Dan, might call the factory to get the info.

If all you need is the front, I would measure the width of your current front sight and get one close, if you're keeping the stock rear sight. Otherwise check out Hieine & Novak..........those 2 seem to be the industry leaders.

But three-dot tritiums can be confusing. Which dot is the front sight? Bar and dot or post and dot have no confusion. Just seeing the front sight helps, but doesn't provide even a flash sight picture.

I've tried to measure with the sight in place and not sure I'm exact enough. For one thing, the height listed for those sights I've looked at don't match up exactly and it seems there are 60 and 65 degree dovetails out there. I'll give DW a try and see if they can/will supply specs.
BTW, can I drift the old sight out and install the new one by hand or does it require a special tool to avoid damage? The original appears to be anchored with a small roll pin through the slide.
