This is the proper forum to use for troubleshooting, gunsmithing and refinishing questions.
If you have a problem with your pistol, this is the proper forum to ask for help.
Before you do post your question though, you may want to have a look in the Gunsmithing Sticky Threads sub-forum, in here. We have collected several interesting articles in there, which can probably answer a lot of your questions.

This is an old thread. You can't post a reply in it. It is left here for historical reasons. Why don't you create a new thread instead?

Hammer won't stay cocked

I have done many 1911's before and have never had this problem. I was asked by a close friend to put a new trigger in his springfield M1911 a-1 i though no problem. After installing the trigger i started reasembly. After putting everything back I went to cock the hammer and realized that it would not stay cocked. I have tried everything that i can think of to fix this problem but i am at a loss any help would be great.
Thanks,
Adam

Sounds like one of the parts didn't go back in the gun quite like it was before it came out. Good luck!

Appears right...but appearances can be deceiving. Is the left leg of the spring on top of the left sear foot? It can get under it and reassemble without a hitch...but the sear can't reset.

Hammer follow . . .

Rip the weapon apart and re-assemble.
If all you did was replace a trigger - well . . .

tear-wown and Re-assemble.

If it is still broken, reassemble with old trigger.

If it works, Reassemble with new trigger.

Let us know how it goes.

Try, Try Again

It's likely the sear spring. That...and missing hammer hooks are the only two things that will stop a 1911 from cocking. Even with 1/8th inch of the sear nose ground off, they'll usually hold full cock at least for a few seconds. I've seen'em actually function for a couple dozen rounds with the sear nose cut off.

At any rate, if the sear spring is in correctly, it should half-cock.

I had the same problem the last time I detail striped it. It turned out the problem was the sear spring. It looked right but after removing it and re assembling it, it worked.

You need to take the grip safety off to see if the sear spring is correct. This is what you should see:

Either that, or an excessively long trigger.
