I have a Springfield 1911-1A and plan to rebarrel to match grade at some point. What is the advantage and disadvantage to going with a ramped barrel?

What caliber? 45ACP ? The reason is to gain more case support in high pressure rounds. Colt doesn't use them either in any caliber.Originally Posted by skychief12

yes it is .45 acp
IIRC, the general concensus on ramped barrels is they are good for everything but the .45, and with the low pressures of .45, I don't think you will be gaining any advantages. If you were to go with a .40, or 10mm.. I'd suggest doing it, otherwise, I would go with a non-ramped.
Here is a dumb idea that just popped into my head. If I go to a ramp would I be able to switch calibers? For example, have a 9mm topend to drop on the same frame?
However, the first priority is to improve accuracy on the .45 ACP with a match grade barrel and bushing. Anything else is just gravy.
Well... yes and no. Having a ramped cut frame will take care of feed ramp width differences between different calibers, however the breach face is narrower on the 9mm than it is on .45, so you would have to have a different slide. The ejector is also longer for the 9mm, and the slide stop is also different.Originally Posted by skychief12
I agree, it would be nice if JMB had designed the 1911 to be a modular design that could easily switch out calibers, but it really isn't that way.
BTW: It's not a dumb idea at all... many people, myself included have asked this question at some point.
