Masses of .45ACP brass. How to use it?

Like the topic says, I've literally got thousands, if not tens of thousands of mostly once fired .45ACP brass. Some is a couple of times fired.

I've only been reloading for a couple of years now, but I've been collecting brass for over 10 "for when I start reloading".

    Now what?

Do I use it all and just keep dropping the shot stuff into the back of the production line, or do I grab a batch of a thousand or so and use those until I have to toss them and break out another batch.

70% of my shooting will be done in an IDPA style/setup. Either training for or shooting in matches. The rest will be for plinking.

Depends if it is military or commercial, if military there are primer crimps to cut or swag. I tend to use my commercial and preped military before dipping into my stash of military that has not had the primer crimps cut yet. I just tend keep using the same ones I fire, they seem to last a long time.

Good point. No it is all commercial stuff.

I think I'm gonna do it in batches. That way I can stick some in long term storage

With that much brass there may be some benefit to sorting it by headstamp - if you really get bored some rainy day. But I think any benefit is based on the thickness of the case walls. If the case walls are pretty much the same thickness I wouldn't bother sorting them for that reason.

Definitely stash a goodly number for later use. You could do the sort by headstamp and nickel/brass if you like. You could also clean, size, de-cap, and bell them so they would be ready to go. If you ever see yourself getting into the S&W 625 game you might set aside 500 or so rounds exclusively for that. The group "in use" for autos will slowly dwindle down as rounds are lost and stepped upon, but that will take a few years, so enjoy!

Yeah that's the basic idea I'm gonna roll with.

I've seperated the headstamps out before. Mostly it is Norinco brass. Hey, the pistol is a Norinco, the ammo should work well hey Actually it did.

I've got some pretty wierd and wonderful cases in my "collection".

Well, if you've already sorted them by headstamp there's another way to fritter away a rainy day - take a headstamp geography tour using this: http://www.afte.org/ExamResources/ga...stamp-Gallery/ as your travel guide.

I know this is a limited risk, but do not forget to check if there is not some Berdan prime brass from an exotic brand lurking around.
