Icon17 Defender Assembly and User Manual PDF ?

    Hi

New to the forum. Have a 2nd hand Defender - great shooter - just shot 1st time and just cleaned tonight. Question - dis-assembly is very easy. Assembly was another issue. I do not have the manual nor the clip to hold the guide rod out for assembly so it was not real fun. Is there a tool available or ideas you have to make bushingless 1911s assembly easier ?

Also does anyone know where I can download a defender owners manual. One is coming from Colt but they do not have it on their website.

    Thanks much !

    Try this...

Cut a piece of plastic from the shaft of a standard ball point pen, about 1/4 inch. Then cut that in half lengthwise. Insert onto the recoil guide rod from your assembly so it stops it outside of the bushing. You should now be able to slip it out. To reassemble, just reverse the procedure by pushing on the flange to push the guide rod through the bushing. Springfield makes a thicker piece that accomplishes the same thing.

    Normally I would suggest http://gunmanuals.net/gun-manuals-c

But I don't see it out there. I agree it would be nice if Colt put the manuals on their website in pdf format or whatever.

When I put mine back together I put in the barrel, then the reverse bushing under the barrel then the loose spring on the captured spring. Next I put the assembled springs in and hold the spring assembly with my left thumb (I am right handed) and put the slide back on the bottom. Be sure to put the flat end of the larger loose spring to the back of the back of the gun.

You can take a regular 5 inch 1911 or a Commander apart in a similar way.

I don't see the Defender listed, but Colt did post a number of manuals online at http://www.coltsmfg.com/publications.aspx

If their site was better organized, this information would be a lot easier to find.

Scroll a little over halfway down under "Match Target Rifle".

    It is listed as:

It appears Colt made one manual for a lot of guns. Too bad things didn't get cross referenced better at some point. It is on gun manuals too.
