Gun looks correct to me (externally), except the grips. As far as i know they should be the checkered brown plastic grips with the Rampant Colt emblems. As said before the serial # puts it around 1949.

Nice Super 38, wish I could find one like that.

    Colt super 38

Like Viking6 this is my first post. I have a Colt SUper 38 left to me by my father. It is serial #688. Unfortunately a previous owner scratched his name in to the side of the receiver. I am considering having the gun refinished by Colt. I have verified that the serial numbers match and that it was probably made in the second month of production in 1929. I would love to hear any comments about its history, pedigree, value etc. I am trying to attach a photo but am not sure that I will be successful. Thank you for your patience and replies.

My opinion, don't refinish it. Looks great the way it is and it can only be original once.

Ol' George's name is on there pretty neatly as such things go.
I would leave it alone for the sake of the remaining original finish.

I got several hits on Google for George J. Werner.
One likely possiblity includes a G.J.W. who held several offices in Westchester Co. NY in the 1920s, including sheriff!

I also saw the Werner buried in Chicago. Another likely suspect, he would have been age 51 when that gun was made. Mature enough to appreciate a good thing, eh?

    Colt Super 38

Thanks for the comments. I'll keep watching for more. I did locate a George Werner buried in a Chicago Suburb. Given that my father was a lifelong Chicagoan I think that might be the best lead to the previous owner.

    My thoughts exactly.
Too many people miss the silver lining because they're expecting gold.
