I use my airsofts a lot for practice these days, but it wasn't long ago that I thought airsoft guns in general were just silly. I thought that a better launching device for those plastic pellets can be made, so why waste extra material and effort to make it look like something it isn't?
The training/practice aspect of airsoft had not dawned to me back then - until about 10 months ago, that is. Its effect on my own performance in practical shooting has been quite noticeable, to say the least.
But in all honesty, I can't love my airsoft pistols the way I absolutely love this:
This is my spring-powered, .22 caliber lead pellet firing Webley Hurricane air pistol, and the cellphone photo doesn't do it justice. Webley stopped making them only a few years ago, but this one is at least 18-20 years old. I've probably fired 3-4000 pellets through it. It is a training tool and a cherished... childhood-reminiscing device!
Airsofts are good for moving drills or other similar kinds of practice, but when I need to remind myself what a proper sight picture looks like, I just get the Webley, go out in my backyard and set up some paper targets about 30 yards away... Its only real downside is that I can't shoot it in my basement (safely), but with the kind of accuracy it is capable of, that would have been pointless (it's a nice big basement, but nowhere near big enough!).
Too many people miss the silver lining because they're expecting gold.
