    Dwyer "Group Gripper" Kit

Has anyone used the Dwyer group gripper from Wilson Combat? Does it improve accuracy? Is it a drop in item, or does a smith need to install it. Thinking about purchasing this, any info on it would be great.
    Thanks,
    Scott

They are supposed to give consistant lock in the barrel lug area, which in turn gives better accuracy.
But all one needs is to put in the right link size, and make sure the barrel is fitted properly in both the lug area and bushing.

What size of gun are going to put one in?
If it isn't durable, it isn't reliable.

Is your barrel locking properly? If yes, the GG will offer you nothing. If it is not, then the GG is not the solution. A new barrel (or a reweld at the barrel's feet and refit) is the way to go.

Check the locking of your barrel and make up your mind if you need to have it refit or changed, do not spend your money on the GG.

The Group Gripper (yes, I have tried it) is a short term solution to a permanent problem. The kit includes a guide rod with a leaf spring in the back end of the rod and a barrel link with a shelf, at lock up the leaf spring pushes up on the self and forces the barrel up into the slide. The problem is that the spring slowly looses tension with every cycle of the gun. So it will improve accuracy for a while, but then groups will begin to open again. If you don't want to spend a lot of money, but want a little improvement in accuracy, fit a bushing to the barrel and slide and install a standard sized match grade barrel link (no tall links, just the standard size link). A tight bushing can eliminate variations in barrel position at the muzzle and a match link will almost always have less slop in its fit than most factory links. Aside from that, a new barrel is your best bet.
There is no problem that can't be made worse with a Dremel!

Thanks for the info, it would be going into a Colt "Combat Target" series 80 1911. The barrel has almost no side to side movement, but it can move in and out a little. Is this movement normal?
