It certainly won't work with roundnosed bullets, but is should work with semi-wadcutters. I used to load my rounds to headspace on the bullet shoulder, and I never had any problems with feeding, or pressures, or whatever, but that may have been a happy coincidence. A different barrel, or a different bullet, and it might not work. Most 1911s will feed just about anything loaded at 1.25" OAL, but if you have to stray too far from that to get the shoulder in contact with the rifling, the round may not feed, or even fit in the mag.
