i have a box of cci blazer ammo. i know it is cheap and have heard you are not supposed to use it. i assume it is because of the cases. is this true? has anyone tried it? also i heard it will tear up your extractor.

    Welcome to the forum.
You are meaning the aluminum case stuff? There is also Blazer Brass ammo.
I don't think it would or should hurt anything to fire it.
The case is aluminum or brass and the extractor is steel. I don't see a problem.

I haven't had any real problems with Blazer of either type in my S&W M&P .45, but my SA 1911 GI doesn't like either the Aluminum nor the Brass cased Blazer.

It's not bad ammo, though I actually like WWB or Remington UMC better. WWB and Blazer cost the same where I live, so I generally stick to WWB.

Some folks don't like Blazer with aluminum cases because the cases aren't reloadable. Many ranges don't like it, and often won't allow it, because they sell the brass as scrap and don't want to have to separate out the aluminum.

Also, some people believe that the aluminum cases cause excessive wear. While aluminum itself is a soft metal, in air it forms a thin coat of aluminum oxide. This is very hard and can be abrasive. In fact I believe that aluminum oxide is used commercially as an abrasive.

I personally avoid the aluminum cased Blazer, but I certainly don't think that shooting one box would hurt anything.

Non reloadable is the only drawback I know about it.

I've just shot through a few boxes of brass cased Blazer, it all goes boom and the cases are good for reloading, but the bullets out of the box aren't the most accurate or consistent. Once reloaded they do better though.

The Aluminum is good for plinking, but can't be reloaded. If you reload, the brass is somewhat of an investment... when you buy a box, if you recover your cases you've saved yourself a good percentage of your reloading costs. If you buy the aluminum, you can only throw it away (or put it in the recycling bin I suppose).

No issues with Blazer, like others I prefer brass so I can recycle.
I have had 4 or 5 with poor crimps where the bullet goes into the case too far and causes a jam, but that is about it in over 20 boxes. Overall not bad at all, go shoot it..............

It's not poor crimping that allows large bullet setback in CCI Blazer Brass. It's a combination of thin brass and soft bullets. When the bullet is seated at the factory, the bullet diameter is reduced slightly and the case stretches a bit too easily. The result is a poor grip by the case on the bullet.

Did some impact testing last year, and CCI BB suffered about twice as much setback as Winchester White Box (at least the lots I tested did), the only two commercial ball ammos in the test. And, believe it or not, additional crimping of CCI BB will increase setback!
