My newest addition: A Giles .45

    Howdy all

Just added a Giles .45 to my bag-o-tricks. I will post pics as soon as I get the chance, but mabye in the meantime someone could help me out with a question: This gun is set up as a wad-gun, and I am thinking I will change out the recoil spring, but I am unsure which weight spring to (spring for) go with.

    Thanks

Thumbs up Welcome to the Forum!

I am not familiar with the Giles. However I am sure that someone will be along to give you the information you need.

John Giles, a semi legendary custom builder in Florida in the 50's - 60's. Known for his bullseye target guns. He along with Clark and a couple of others were the "must have" 1911s if you were going to compete at the Camp Perry matches.
"The 1911 was the design, given by God to us through John M. Browning, that represents the epitome of what a killing tool needs to be. It was true in 1911 and it's true now." - Col. Robert Coates commanding, U.S. Marine Corp Special Operations Command Detachment 1 (DET 1)

Some Clark guns that I've seen (pics) have something apparently welded to the end of the dustcover, with what appear to be a couple of screws; I think this was some sort of external means of tightening the slide to frame fit, and I believe is attributed to Giles. The screws bear on the recoil spring tunnel when the gun is in battery, and can be tightened to take up developing slack in the fit. "Giles Slide Guide", or similar?

Could you specify a ballpark price range for a gun in pretty good shape?

I have bought several Clarks, but no Giles.

I am not asking what anyone has paid, but for a general range.

    Thanks.

Actually, I was thinking of this:

Thank you, those are superb. I didn't mean to imply that the one at CFI was a Clark, or a Giles, only that the thing on it seems to do the same function as the others.

A Giles 45 should run okay with a 16 pound recoil spring.
The little collar with 2 screws in it that is attached to the end of the dust cover was called a Giles Slide Guide and was one of the methods used to tighten frame/slide fit. If you get over zealous with the adjustment I would think it might damage the dust cover leading to a crack over time.
Now you'll need a matching Giles 38 wadgun to go with it.
