IMHO the leatherman Supertool is the most rugged multi-tool manufactured. I've been carrying one around in my pocket for a long time now. The supertool is great with locking tools and a slim design that makes carrying it in your pocket easier if you prefer not to have a huge pouch on your belt. I broke the pliers on one supertool I had and I sent them back to leatherman and they were replaced without question. I learned that the leatherman is not to be used as a prybar when separating brake pads. I would say that I'm disappointed about Tim's political agenda, but I like the leatherman too much to stop buying them.

I only had one problem with a leatherman years ago, I wore out the cutters on the needle nose, they replaced them with no problems.
I have carried a leather wave since they came out, I bought a new one this year just because I wanted a new one and looked and could not find anything that came close to the warranty and quality.

Gerber for me. One hand opening, replaceable cutters, scissors and a great finish. Has worked flawlessly for fishing, hunting, camping, household chores, and that once-in-a-while automotive fix.

I have used a Gerber for years and only issue I had was a broken screw driver tip which was my own fault for trying to pry something open with it.
I used to carry a swiss army knife a lot, but it is still big enough that I leave it at home 1/2 the time. I then got a small WInchester multitool - but the knife was not very good - would not hold an edge.
Finally, I got the Leatherman Micra. I love this thing.
I prefer the scissors to the pliers (small pliers that size aren't of much use anyway). And, it is so small that I finally have a knife I can take everywhere - even to work in dress pants.
I looked at the Gerber that is similar in size, but went with the Leatherman.

I have my late grandfather's original leatherman. He had it for about 5 yrs. and I've been carrying it for nearly 12. So far, the only damage done is the tip of the knife is broken. I burred the wire cutters on some steel wire, but buffed it out with a diamond lapp. Good as new- in fact, the cutters are a little sharper now. I've read all the talk about 1 handed use- I routinely run into situations where I can't let go of something ( like overhead light fixtures) and can access all of the tools one handed. Of course, after better than 15 yrs of use, the hinges are loosened a bit. Also, since I've got the original leather pouch, I'd have to say that a snap closure leather belt pouch is better than velcro and nylon.
