Competition 38 Super: cut on the back of the barrel

    Colt38SuperBackOfBarrel.jpgColt38SuperSideOfBarrel.jpg

I bought a Colt Competition in 38 Super.

The back of the barrel has a cut machined into the back of the barrel. What's it for? It scratches my SWC loads -- which have no problem in my other 38 pistols.

And what's with that throat? It looks narrow to me.

The cut is for extractor clearance. My 9mm barrels have the same cut.

    Thanks.

My 9mm 1911 has the cut but my other 38 Super does not. The other 38 Super barrel is ramped and fully supported; the whole right side is a little bit forward of the left side. I'd never noticed that before.

So you're really saying that the other .38 Super also has the cut, but it's a much bigger cut ...

"A much bigger cut.' It runs from the hood to the ramp.

The ramp is narrow and neither of my Super 38 Colts feed 125gr Gold Dots; however, 125gr XTPs (.357 caliber) feed very well.

As far as chamber support goes, I have a ramped Para that feeds everything, but the chamber tolerances are not as tight as the Colt. Doing a visible, the Para chamber is wider and it appears that the Colt has the same, if not better chamber support than the Para. Both Colts have very good, if not excellent, accuracy at distance.

The first and second pics in the original post are from the Colt. The barrel pic in your quote, from another pistol, has a Clark ramp and is and fully supported.

The Colt barrel has a narrow throat and small cut for extractor clearance. My other 38 Supers have barrels like the pic in a subsequent pic. The entire right side of the barrel - from the hood to the ramp - is relieved; I didn't recognize it as a cut.

The problem with the Colt? The bottom of the cut digs into SWC bullets -- on the nose as well as the shoulder.
