    Magazine news from Wilson Combat

Over the weekend I had occasion to try to answer a question about 1911 magazines and somebody chimed in with "Wilson Combat mags are the best." When I said "Which ones, they offer three different lines?" I was rewarded with a typical deer-in-headlights look.

I went to Wilson's web site to get links to the 47Ds, the ETMs, and the Service Plus mags, and I couldn't find the Service Plus on the site. For those who aren't familiar with them the Wilson Service Plus magazines are stainless steel, 7-round magazines with the original, Browning-designed follower and GI feed lips.

I sent in a "Contact Us" inquiry to Wilson Combat, and I just received a reply:

Hawkmoon, Currently discontinued the Service plus magazines as the 47 series magazine is our best series of 7 round magazine. We do apologize for this. Please let us know if there is anything else we can help you with. Thank you
So we have lost another source of proper, Browning-designed GI pattern magazines. Fortunately, Check-Mate still offers them.

Those Wilson Service mags were always CheckMate 7 round, hybrid feed lipped mags.

The Wilson Rep on another forum explained the reason for dropping them, was inconsistent delivery from the manufacturer.

Regarding CheckMate sources, I typically buy my CheckMate mags from Top Gun Supply, and love doing business with them. They are a superb retailer.

While I haven't ordered from them, Thunder Mountain Custom is another that retails CheckMate mags, and parts. The latter is somewhat of a big deal as many have reported problems ordering directly from CheckMate, and Top Gun Supply typically hasn't carried replacement parts for CheckMate mags, other than bumper pads. The ability to now get replacement springs, followers, etc., from somebody other than CheckMate direct is a good thing.
