Kimber Ultra Aegis or STI Escort

    Hello everyone

I am evaluating getting either a Kimber Ultra Aegis or STI Escort, 9mm, as a CWW. This is the size I want- nothing larger. Looking at quality used pistols vs new. For those who have experience with these pistols, please tell me the pros and cons - specifically magazine problems, spring issues, other operational issues, problems with different ammo (I practice with my reloads, so want a pistol that will accept that). And things to ask the previous owner about, if there are common issues. I've searched the threads here, but it seems discussions of these pistols are all 2 to 4 years old. In other forums I read conflicting experience with both these pistols, including claims that the STI is built better than the Kimber. Please share your related experience, and thanks in advance for the guidance and suggestions.

Smaller/shorter 1911s can be a bit finicky to run, but the shorter OAL of the 9mm cartridge helps a bit.

I think both pistols you mention are good. Kimber may have had more than its fair share of problems in the past with some parts, but we hear less and less of those, so perhaps they're history... but could be a factor if you're buying a used pistol. The Aegis models are Series II pistols, meaning they have a firing pin safety that is actuated by the grip safety... not everyone's favorite. STIs are closer to the standard 1911 in that regard.

Personally, I'd go with the STI. The company has more experience selling sub-caliber (i.e. not .45 Auto) 1911s than anyone out there. Sure they mostly sell to competitive shooters, but they too get annoyed if their guns don't run (and they use them more than most, so they know it if they don't run), so I don't consider this a disadvantage. But if you buy the gun used, be wary of anyone telling you they tinkered with this or that... some STI owners are known for being what we call 'Dremel-happy'.

Thanks for the info, Spyros. I found a Ultra II Aegis 9mm, 2 magazines shot through it with no alterations, for $925 shipped. Night sights, 2 mags (one extended) and holster. Oct 31, 2013 manufacturer date. Are there any operational issues known for later 2013 Aegis pistols?
    Thanks again!

You're welcome, I really wouldn't know anything about specific dates. All I can say is that in the last few years we've noticed a drop in complaints from Kimber owners.

Thanks, Spyros. I'll check on the date with the Kimber sub-forum folks and see if anyone knows. I am leaning toward a STI Escort option, so will be looking that way. Someone mentioned that they have a more personalized production process so there is better quality. Good advice on asking about tinkering; I'll e sure to ask.
