Anyone else surprised that Wilson has entered the true "Commander" market with the CQB Commander? I thought Wilson was a diehard 4 inch bull barrel group... Any thoughts?

I think business is slowing down in the deluxe 1911 field and they are looking for a niche to fill.
Something to preserve their fans from the shame of having to buy a Brown.
Even before, they were on record saying they would build a 4.25", if the customer would send them an appropriate slide from Caspian. I don't expect that many took that option, though.

It's interesting that you say that because a few years ago, I inquired if they would build a custom commander if I suppplied the parts and I received a definitive no. I think each persons milage will vary based on who you talk to at Wilson and what their particular mood is at anyone time. For example, I also inquired a few years ago about either a suppressor ready 1911 and/or a Tactical Elite barrel installed on a Wilson Tactical Supergrade. Again, told no each time because of this or that reason. Not "poo-pooing" Wilson I just find this move interesting when they have been adamant about not building 4.25 inch guns. I also agree with what Jim Watson said about the deluxe 1911 market slowing down and wanting to fill a niche.
I wrote what I wrote because I remember their rep saying as much here, but this was a long time ago.
EDIT to add:
Found it. Here ya go, from back in Feb 2010 (#13):
