I recently went to a sporting goods store to check out a Springfield(mil-spec) pistol. I looked it over and it looked totally fine. But when I pulled the magazine out there was one small problem. There were lines where it looked like
someone had partially sheered some of the paint off of the magazine. Would someone be able to explain what this could be? They said it was a brand new gun.

Where are the lines located on the mag? Are they between the latch slot and the top of the mag or exactly where?

The lines are all up and down the outside tubular part of the magazine, the part
of the magazine that holds the ammunition. Forgive me, my gun terminology is very basic but it just looked to me like someone had taken some sort of abrasive
tool and scratched the bejesus out of it!!! Being that it was a new gun this really surprised me!!! Tell me what you think swamptertwo?

mill specs are not deburred, meaning that the insides ect have not been smoothed of machine marks and such. This i believe would cause these ruff scratches on the mag once inserted into the mag well(handle). Basically this is a bottom line pistol and the machines that cut the frame leave behind ruff spots that on the upper line models are polished out. The again my TRP which cost 1400 has some in it, but not bad and not ruff to touch. Its called your buying a Springfield, but for the price maybe that is ok to you. My 1400 bucks and problems are not ok for me. I expect out of the box quality at that price.
Check out other makes such as colt for a bit more you will get more quality, or buy it and trick it out by a gunsmith.

My SA GI 1911 has the same after about a month of use. If the pistol you were looking at was the one in the glass case this could have happened because prospective buyers were ejecting and inserting the magazine.
If it's any help, My mags all have scratches at the top of them and my gun hasn't jammed once.
