Hello,

I bought my GI 1911 about a month ago and have put about 450 rounds through it so far. The only thing that bugs me about it are the combat sights. They're great no fuss no muss sights, but I'd like something that i can allign against a target with a black background (the ones i use at the range) I was thinking the white 3-dot novak sights and was wondering if anyone knows how much trouble it is to get these attached. Should I have a machinist do it for me? Can i do it myself? Are these good sights? If not are there some better ones.

I'm not doing anything spectacular with the gun, just enjoying it at the range.

Thanks in advance for your comments. This is my first post, i'm happy to find a place to learn more about this great gun.

If I remember right, there is a Novak-style rear sight, which can be installed in a normal, military-size dovetail (60 degrees x .290"). It is made by Chip McCormick. The way it works, is that a base is inserted into the standard dovetail, and then a Novak-lookalike is screwed on that base.

However, I am not sure if it comes with white dots etc. Also, I am not that sure if your pistol has that dovetail cut for the rear sight, or a different one. Ask the maker directly.

Funny you should ask. I e-mailed novak about the same thing and they said that to replace the stock springfield sights with the low profile tritium sights would take a day or two, require milling and cost 275.95 plus return postage.

damn... I'd rather spend that on Ammo.

It might just be a better deal to buy them and have a local gunsmith install them.
