View Full Version : Capturing a rare event in Las Vegas

First of all, everyone please excuse the mediocre quality of the first picture shown below. It's a cellphone picture. I rarely use my phone as a camera, but given the rarity of the event, I simply had no choice, because as you can see, my camera is in the shot!

This, folks, is El Comandante himself, using a Canon SLR! :scared: I'm sure you'll agree, it's an event worth capturing for posterity...

This is our brand-new Canon EOS 60D, wearing a Canon 18-200mm stabilized lens. Evi and I bought it during our US trip. The camera was used to take most of the pictures you saw in the SHOT Show report of the E-zine.

And this is the picture that John took with the Canon.

If there's enough interest among Canon fans here, I can have T-shirts printed with the first picture on the front... what do y' all think? :D

Can you Photoshop it to make it appear that the boss shaved?

He looks like he's in pain.

This gives me hope (through John did call me from Vegas and warn me this image would surface).
I have heard great things of the new 60D being a Canon shooter myself (7D and 40D) I am sure this is true.
I sometimes use the 18-200 on my 40D as a second body or to hand off to a friend. Super zooms get a bad rap I believe this is undeserved. I have sold many prints taken with my 40D and 18-200.
You should look into the Canon 50 f/1.4, that is a great lens to get creative with.
Once again I am given hope John can be straightened out :D.

Can you Photoshop it to make it appear that the boss shaved? My skills in Photoshop are quite limited...

This gives me hope (through John did call me from Vegas and warn me this image would surface).I told him what I'd do with it, but as (his) luck would have it, I couldn't get my phone to send the picture to the laptop we had in Vegas... I guess John may have quietly been hoping that I'd forgotten about it... :D

This is our second 18-200mm lens. The 10D (which is far from retirement yet) is wearing an older, discontinued Sigma superzoom, non-stabilized. I'll do a side-by-side comparison of the two lenses when I have some time, as a study of the "don't try to save money on lenses" principle, even for amateurs like me.

We also bought another lens, an EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM. We haven't put it through its paces yet, but it seems promising.

Once again I am given hope John can be straightened out :D.I wouldn't hold my breath, sadly. Frank is right, John really was in pain, holding that camera. It's bad enough that he actually owns a point & shoot Canon!

On a separate note, I'm quite feverish right now, and I've steadily been getting worse since starting this thread. Perhaps there's some truth in karma, after all... :bed:

I just discovered this "behind-the-back" stabbing, being busy the last couple of days setting up a family server here. So, now it's my turn to comment.

First of all, as you all understand, Spyros lost access to the corporate jet by publishing this one and of course by simply buying the Canon camera. I am also thinking to reduce his monthly bonus by 50%, because he bought a Windowze netbook, instead of an Apple notebook.

Second, I have to admit that I held that camera for a very very brief period, the only reason being that I wanted to show Evi how to use the super-structure line shown in the picture, to make her composition better.

Third, I have to also admit that the Canon did an excellent job in Las Vegas. As Spyros mentioned, the majority of pictures shot in the Show were shot by Evi, using that camera. I contributed very few (if any, I can't remember) and these were shot with (I HATE TO ADMIT IT) a Canon S90. I just wasn't feeling like carrying the D700 with me in the show. Too large, too heavy for carrying around all day.

Fourth, I used the D700 I had with me (together with two prime lenses, a 28mm f/2.8 and a 50mm f/1.4) to take some ... personal pictures around the Strip. I'll try to remember and post some here. To be frank, I did miss my zooms, but being restricted to one focal length has its advantages. It forces you to rethink about composition, in a different manner.

Finally, making me appear shaved? That was only a two days beard. Usually I have much more than this!

Get well soon Spyro!

I'm actually too sick to remember what it is, at the moment...

It's the Apple TV you silly! I tried it a little, and it takes videos from my Apple desktop and shows them on TV. Now, it remains to see if I can make it play the films that my wife downloads from a Russian site.

I have come to love primes and shallow depth of field.
For low light it is tough to beat f/1.4. I like using shallow DOF for subject isolation. I carry a handful of primes along with a few zoom lenses.
My favorite zooms are 17-55 f/2.8, 70-200 f/2.8L MKII, and 10-22
as far as primes I love 50 f/1.4, 85 f1.8, and 28 f/1.8. It seems with this kit and my 7D and 40D I can get most everything done I need to until studio work and then comes strobes which is a whole 'nother ball of wax.

I don't know how I missed this the first time through.

Canon 60D: $850US

Catching our Nikon loving boss "in flagrante": Priceless. :lm:

Now that the gentle joshing is over with, I compliment you on the shot John. The lines in that photo are really well done.

+1. Everyone should be required to start out with a single 'fast' 50MM as their only lens. Learning to zoom with your feet will make you a better photographer.

A D700 can wear you out after toting it around for a day but I think it would still be worth it. If I was forced to use 1 fixed focal length lens to do it all, it would be an 85mm f1.4D.
