View Full Version : checkering Talon V vs GRP

Was able to "fondle" both a GRP and a Talon IV yesterday at my local gunshop.

and had a question about the difference in the checkering between the 2

the GRP felt a little... gritty on the paws...like they were higher / deeper than the IV.

is this due to the 20 on the GRP and the 25 on the IV... not sure I like the 20 if that is the case

what would it take to get the 25 on a GRP?

I felt like it would RUB more than the IV, and not be as comfortable as a shooter... great in a combat situation with gloves maybe... but a little rough on the mits

GRP felt like a nice piece regardless.... but then again so did the IV

I already have a 3" kimber Ultra Carry II for conceal carry, so really looking for a range piece, a great shooter, home defense, etc piece.... not sure the Talon IV is going to meet that need (but nice to handle anyway)

any insight welcomed

marinakorp,

The difference may have been that the Talon IV's mainspring housing is serrated and not checkered (at least that is how they are normally built). The serrations are to avoid snagging your clothing when you draw the pistol from concealment. The GRP's mainspring housing is 20lpi (if it is the one with the lanyard loop on it). I don't think they can change that. You can probably order a GRP without the lanyard loop and get a standard mainspring housing that is checkered at 25lpi. Or they may be able to 'smooth' out the 20lpi checkering with some fine sandpaper before the gun is perma-koted. Call Craig at Nighthawk and discuss the options with him.

Checkering at 25 lpi is less coarse than 20 lpi, so it is possible that it is that, that bothers you. As stated, call Craig and discuss the options with him.

I just checked a GRP and the checkering on the front strap is 25lpi - the same as on a Talon IV. The one I have doesn't feel rough to me. It gives a good, secure grip on the gun. 25lpi is a good compromise between the 20 and 30 lpi checkering. I am sure your 'paws' would get used to the feel after a few range sessions!

The best part about NightHawk Customs is that they would be happy to do whatever you want! Just give Craig a call.
