Im wondering what the general thoughts are concerning the use of recoil bump pads in 1911's

A properly tuned 1911 does not need a shock buffer. Typically, you can expect these not to affect reliable operation in a 5" pistol, or even in some Commander-length ones, but if you are talking about the shorter models (3-3.5" barrels) you can expect them to cause problems.

i use them in all of my 5" 1911, both Colt & Kimber. its takes many many rounds to wear them down, but they do wear. If you shoot lots of rounds, it might be a good idea. if not, you probably don't need them

I've seen many a 1911 with 50,000 and more rounds, without shock buffers, and no problems. IMO, it's an answer looking for a question. -B.

I have one in my Springer 5" and it works fine no problems.I shoot lots of rounds through that one.I try to put one in my 4" Kimber CDP didnt work.caused slide lock problems. They are good for lots of consecutive rounds i think but just dont want to carry my Kimber with slide lock problems.

They will usually work in a 5 inch 1911, sometimes in a 4 1/4 inch, rarely in shorter barrels. They are not really necessary in most 1911's, the one exception would be those chambered in 10mm and shooting full power 10mm ammo. I would not put one in a defensive use pistol.

I'm always confused by this statement..."I would not fill_in_the_blank to a defensive pistol". Not trying to be sarcastic here guys, just trying to learn. But serious question, if I wouldn't do 'it' to a defensive pistol, why would I do 'it' to any pistol? (Sights and aesthetics not withstanding.)
