Hello,

I posted this in the Les Baer forum but I probably should have posted it here.
I apologize for the double post.

I am doing my first full 1911 build-up and I am using a Les Baer forged steel match frame. I just received the frame from my FFL dealer today and was doing some deburring and trial fitting of parts. When I put the disconnector in the frame and inserted the pin, I noticed that the disconnector wasn't sticking out of the top of the frame very far when I pushed it all the way up and it made contact with the pin. I broke out my calipers and started to measure hole locations. All of the pin holes seem to be located about 0.020" farther down from the top of the slide than my Sprinfield and Sistema . I don't have a slide fitted yet and I may be panicing for nothing, but this seems like WAY too much of a difference to be acceptable. I called Les Baer and he assured me that the holes are in the right location but I am still a little uneasy about it. I am afraid that the disconnector won't be pushed down far enough to disengage the sear from the trigger and the gun will go into full auto mode. I hope he's right because I have since found another problem. The bottom of the magazine slot isn't cut deep enough for the mag release to fully engage and lock the magazine in place. I am going to have to set it up in a milling machine and deepen the slot at the bottom front of the magazine slot.

Have any of you ran into these problem before or is it just additional metal that is provided for fitting??

Thanks in advance,

Greg

Offhand, I'd say that one needs to go back to Les. Not only will the disconnect fail to reset, the sear geometry in relation to the hammer won't work either...unless the hammer pin hole is screwy too.

Get hold of Kuhnhausen's Volume 2 and check the specs just to see how far off they really are. All hole locations are taken from the slidestop pinhole location...either directly or indirectly...but that's the starting point.

Tuner,

I checked all of the holes and they all seem to be off the same amount. I'm thinking that the whole frame wasn't located correctly in the drilling jig. When I called Les he said that the frame rails are 0.006" larger for hand fitting of the slide to the frame. That would leave the holes an additional 0.014" low. Could this be too much for fitting the lower barrel lugs?

Thanks,

Greg

He said that the rails are .006 higher or wider???

Doesn't matter. If the holes are mislocated, the hammer/sear/disconnect group won't work right...unless he also sells too-tall disconnects.

I'm back. I had to take a turkey break. :D

He said that the rails are 0.006" higher. I believe they are wider too. I think I will be calling Mr. Baer again tomorrow.
