Just got a Colt 1991 Government Series 80 blued finish for $689 before tax and fees. Is that a reasonable deal? This is a first gun I ever owned.

The finish is excellent, the silde has a little bit of lateral free play, but it's tolerable. After some CLP at the right places, the action becomes very smooth. The trigger pull is light and crisp.

I particularly like the the Rosewood Grip on this gun. They are beautiful and feels very good on the hand.

The Ejector port have a little bit of brass residue at the top of the slide leftover from the test fire at the factory (not visible from this picture).

The muzzle rim has no gouge marks at all. It's beautifully made.

At the Range

After applying some CLP at the right places, rubbed down the gun with CLP, and ran a patch through the barrel. It's ready for it's first run.

First clip with target at 25ft, standing position.

This the 2nd time I shot a .45. I mostly shoot .22LR and I'm working on a new grip and stance so I'm no marksman at this time. However, the gun fired wonderfully.

The recoil is much more controllable than I expect, and the gun fits in my hands like a glove. Ammo is Winchester Whitebox from WalMart. The front dot gets dirty by the end of the 100 round session. And the white dots are not that visible at the lowlight in the indoor range in the first place.

Questions I have?
1. Can I call Colt to find out when my gun was made by the serial number?

2. Is $689 before tax and fees a good deal?

3. How often do I need to clean the gun? I wiped down the gun with some CLP after the session, and add some oil at the slide rail, and a little around outside of the barrel.

I'm very happy with the gun so far. Glad I have chosen a 1911! Once again proven that a simple and robust design is timeless!

Your pistol is an NRM 1991A1 & I believe production started around 2002 w/ a few transitional models. You can give Colt a ring, but I'm not sure what info you'll get. One of the members may have accurate production data for these pistols based on serial number.

2. Is $689 before tax and fees a good deal?

Yep, $689-bucks is a square deal. The pistol looks great & good pic's also :D .

Routine maintenance pretty much varies with the person and/ or pistol. I clean them every time they're shot. The depth of cleaning is commensurate with the number of rounds blasted. For lubrication, plenty of quality products available. Keeping the pistol properly lubricated is important; there are a couple of great write-up's under the Technical Issues Forum.

Nice pistol & Welcome to the Forum!

Silly question, what's NRM stands for?

Thanks

Nah, not a silly question. NRM stands for New Roll-Mark, just an easy acronym to help distinguish 1st from current generation production; nothing "official". The first generation of 1991's had a larger single-text roll-mark. Take a look at one of the Colt "Pic" threads & you're bound to see at least one.

earthworm94, you did very well on that deal.

Love those NRM's.........Colt is doing now what they should have been doing for the last 20 years..........making good cleaned lined 1911's which not only look good, but function as they should.

Very nice looking 1911........let us know how she shoots.

Those guns are lovely, aren't they? My first handgun was one of those. I paid $600 for mine, but that was almost two years ago, and I've heard of a price hike since then, so $689 doesn't sound bad to me at all. I am so glad they didn't have the gun I wanted when I went to the store, because I never would've gotten the Colt if they had. And that would be sad.

Yep. Same here. I wanted a SA Mil-Spec Parkerized but those thing has a 60-90day back log at this time, so I went ahead and bought the Colt. Never regreted my decision, excepted I went sustaintially over budget. I think this weapon fired even better than a SA Loaded in my own opinion, and Colt 1911 in this setting is an absolute classic beauty, and it shot like one. I just really need to work on my marksmanship, because my skill is not doing this gun justice.
