View Full Version : Normal "wear" and usage marks?

This is not so much a problem as a potential concern. I have a S.A. 1911A1, just over 500 rounds old, and after it's most recent day at the range it has developed a few brass-colored markings/scratches on the slide, at the pointed end of the "dent" rear of the ejection port. Is this considered normal, or a sign of an ejection problem?

FYI, the gun is stock except for an added 18.5lb. recoil spring.

Howdy,

The brass marks are coming from the slide hitting the brass before it can clear the port. Won't harm the gun, but if it gets whacked just right..or wrong, as the case may be...it'll bat the brass into your face. Sometimes it gets knocked forward...sometimes backward...sometimes straight up, and others will kick sideways just like they should.

The causes can range from extractor tension and/or geometry...ejector length...recoil spring too heavy or too light...even the diameter of the case rims can have an effect on ejection angle and release timing.

Thanks for the response. I figure the new recoil spring is mostly to blame, seeing as there were no brass marks before it appeared. But honestly the little colorations just seem to give the gun more personality.

Until one whacks into my forehead. Cheers for the heads-up.
