Today was one of the hottest days of the summer. Fire hazard was high and it's during days like this that fires are started. Well, it was the turn of our area to loose some the very little forest we have left around Athens.

I do not have any statistics yet, about how much forest was burned, but it was enough to make everyone sad.

Here are some pictures we took.

For those Greek among our readers, the fire started on a small hill behind the "Vlahika" area, in Vari.

Pretty soon, every available fire-fighting unit of the Greek Fire Brigade was on the seen. The Canadairs were the first.

The Ericson helicopter was next.

And then the Scorpion Russion helicopter.

A couple more shots to see how close to the houses the fire was.

The Canadairs did a wonderful job.

The irony, the Fire Watching Hut, on the top of the hill.

As we are talking the fire is supposedly extinguished, but the helicopters are still working on some left-overs. We all hope it's completely put out in an hour or two, because the helis and airplanes can't fly at night.

John, I'm glad you're all right. I'm sure you're pretty angry about this.

I didn't hear about this in the news, and my folks are here in Crete, so they didn't know about this, until just now.
