I am new to this forum.I know most of you are Colt fans so am I.
Question how would most of you rate the Colt 70 Series plain govertment model compared to other 1911 available even custom guns? Would you rather customize the Colt or buy another gun already equipped? I guess this was really two questions.
Sorry about that

Do you mean the New series 70 or the original? Or both? I own a new series 70 in blue and love it dearly. I would say the Colt series 70 is better than most 1911's out there today but that is my opinion. As far as custom guns go, it's such a broad spectrum with a price range that can vary by thousands of dollars...it's too tough to compare with a general catergory. You can definitely customize a 70 series if you would like. I guess it would depend at least partially on your budget!

It would be hard to beat a series 70 Colt 1911. If you wanted a custom there are some you can get straight from the Colt custom shop that are as good or better than any others out there. For the money and time you would be better off getting one straight from the custom shop. As an all around reliable 1911 the Colt series 70 factory stock would be the way to go. Semper Fi Devil Dog

Good and not-so-good examples of any mass-produced firearm exist...in theory anyway; I can't ever remember Pop or I having a "bad" Colt produced during the "70-Series" run :D. A quality example of one of these pistols will provide great service.

Hey Roc1.I happen to own a Colt MKIV 70 govt from about 1976 as well as an Ed Brown fullsize Kobra. Both guns are wonderful.Infact, shooting the Colt is just as satisfying to me and gets taken to the range ALOT.In my opinion, you dont need to drop 2300 on a custom to get a sweet gun. Both guns function great and have had no jams or FTFS so far. For looks, the Colt 1911 is also hard to beat and the blueing is particularly nice. Ill be keeping mine til doomsday.HAPPY THANKSGIVING to all.

I was given two NIB Colt MKIV Series 70 Govt models about two months ago. My uncle had them since 76 and never used them. I have them now and have shot a few rounds through them. They are my first. I'm considering a new triggers and a few other slight modifications. The only thing I dislike about them is the slide is so stiff and tight. I suspect once I've shot about 1000 rounds through them, that'll change.

Welcome to the Forum! Man, your uncle is a pretty nice guy! Does he need another nephew?!? :D
The pistols will defintely finish fitting themselves together over the first 500-1000 rounds.

Thanks Mitchjoe. I was thrilled to discover this forum. Imagine, everything I could ever want to know it one spot! One stop shopping! :)
You know, good things rarely happen to me. When these 1911's dropped into my lap, I just about had a heart attack. They are sweet! I've already made matching holsters for them and have taken then on my last elk hunting trip. I've never owned a true Colt before. I'm hooked! :)

There are far worse things to be addicted to, and perhaps few better.

Well, I'm in love with them, BUT, I'm not impressed with the hammer or trigger. I'm a Cowboy Action Shooter and have modified my Vaqueros so that they have ultra-light triggers and hammers. Any recommendations for the 1911s?

Uncle Chan:
To get the type of trigger pull I think you're looking for will require a knowledgeable 'smith. You may get lucky w/ "drop-in" trigger group parts, or a DIY fitting, but odds are not good :D.
I'd recommend having one of the pistols triggers set ~3-1/2lb's. and try 'er out. Pull weights under 3lb's. are tough to acheive w/o compromising longevity. That and a 1911 with a sub-3lb. trigger is a whole different animal than a single-action revolver :D!
Hey, and since you've got a few posts up, how about a couple of pic's?!?

Mitchjoe, how do I go about inserting an image? Does it have to be a link to a website with my images on it? Different boards have different methods of posting.

Uncle Chan:
Exactly. you need a place to "host" the image(s) & then link to said. I use Photobucket & just snag the [IMG] tag to paste into posts.

Since Uncle Chan has another thread going to discuss the trigger pull question, please do NOT continue that discussion in this thread.
Thank you.

Mitchjoe,
let's see if this works:

I'll produce some more and post them as well. I disliked the original grips and put on some hogue panels instead. they are much better IMHO.

I just purchased a Colt series 70 reissue and it's fit and finish are perfect, tighter than the original 1979 edition I have except the blue polished slide looks like a mirror on my original version. Overall I had 5 or 6 different 1911 variations and I chose the Colt, just shy of a grand.I also have a WWI reissue again, perfect.
