My son is looking at a combat commander. What he asked me, I dont know, so I will ask youse guys.

Can the mags from a regular full size 1911, be used in a commander????

And yes, I know that the mag would be too long, but would it work.

FS and Cmdr use the same magazines. The officer mag would be too short for a FS or Cmdr.

My son is looking at a combat commander. He asked me, and I did not know, if regular 1911 mags can be used in a commander, with excess lenght hanging out the bottom.

Yes, standard seven round mags work. If you need more, I suggest the Checkmate mags with the hybrid feed lips and dimpled follower.

The Commander and full size Government pistols both have the same size frames and share the same size magazines. Is it possible he is looking at an Officers ACP, Defender, or Special Combat Officers model wich would take the shorter "compact" magazine? If so, there is an adapter that can be used to accept the longer mags into the shorter frames to make sure the magazine does not insert too far into the frame wich could cause a misfeed. There are several companies that offer an adapter so you can look around but I found this link; http://www.topgunsupply.com/x-grip-1911c1-officers-one-piece.html Good Luck!

They have the same size GRIP frames; the Commander and Gov't. Model frames are different, but use the same size mags.

Take care,

Rick

I always thought the Commander and Government models shared the same frame and after doing some research found that they are infact different. Thanks Rick!

The Commander / Combat Commander has 4.25 inch barrel, the Government Model is 5 inch. Therefore the slide is .75 inch shorter. Because the slide is shorter the slide rails are slightly shorter, not by much, not sure exactly what the dimension is without disassembling two pistols.
Any way the Commander slide assembly is different than the GM, the firing pin and extractor are the same. The frame dust cover is also .75 shorter, the frame parts are the same for both pistols, except that a Commander has a different style grip safety and the round hammer.
Some small parts may be Model specific, and of course caliber specific.

Grips and magazines are the same size as has been posted.
