I have the LWC in 38 Super and in cleaning it I noticed a “Y” inscribed on the left side lower part of the trigger guard.
Can anyone clue me in on what the designation means ??
(sorry I don’t have access to a digital camera)

Assuming that you're not misinterpreting the Colt Verified Proof (intertwined "VP" in a triangle) mark, that's likely the code of the assembler of your pistol.

Did you mean "left side REAR of the trigger guard"? Nick

WJ, methinks you have solved it. The VP is on the lower left trigger guard of both my old commanders (one steel and one alloy) and both marks were struck a bit carelessly and difficult to make out if one doesn't know what to look for. Could easily be mistaken for a "Y" in either case.

It's definitely a "Y" checked with a magnifier.

yes - right along the side of the guard where it joins the frame.
Thanks for the replys.

To try to clear up the confusion. The "VP" Colts' verified proof is on the left side of the trigger guard at the FRONT upper joining coming down from the frame. The letter[in your case a "Y"] at the rear of the trigger guard where it joins the grip[just in front of the mag. release] is,I believe, the assemblers mark ,just as Mr. Kuleck said. Nick

Thanks Smokey for clearing this up. The proof "VP" is clearly visible at the front upper (I had not noticed this before either !!) and I will consider the "Y" at the lower rear the mark of the craftsman who assembled this beautiful piece for me.
Thanks again to all who responded.

Actually there seems to be some confusions about where those proof marks were placed. As I said earlier, on both my commanders (one LW and one CBT) the mark is on the left side of the trigger guard just adjacent to the mag release button. I checked a government size series 80 and the proof mark is near the front of the trigger guard as described by others. Below are pics of the two commanders: First the steel gun and then the alloy gun. Please excuse the legibility of the alloy as it is over 50 years old.
