Got to the range yesterday with my Colt XSE Rail Gun.

Things I changed on it before firing was the plastic MSH with a stainless S&A, the thumb safety was replaced with a Caspian that uses a modified hammer pin that goes into a groove, square pin and tab to keep the opposite safety on and is rock solid and some Alumgrips. The Caspian was very easy to fit for anyone looking for a quality ambi thumb safety.

Reason for changing the MSH was I didn't like the plastic and wanted a magwell anyway, the safety was done so I would have no issues from the more standard ambi safeties which in this case when I took out the right side grip to clean, the Colt safety instantly fell out.

The stock grips are beautiful looking but I wanted something slightly different. I'll probably use the Colt grips on some later project one day.

Shot 300rds of various ammo through the Colt all in 230gr. 200rds of Remington UMC, Winchester and Federal ball, 25 rounds of HST and another 25 of HST +P, 25 Winchester PDX-1 and 25 Remington UMC HP.

Mags used were the stock Colt 8rd, 4- 8rd Wilson Combat Elite, 2 -8rd Wilson Combat 47D, 6 - 8rd McCormick imitation mags, 2 - 8rd Wolff ACT mags, 2 regular 8rd ACT mags and 1 Early WWII Colt 7rd.

Accuracy was excellent and will post the pictures of the targets later.

100% reliability with all mags and ammo. Brought it home cleaned and re-lubed and its still looking great. http://www.ar15.com/images/smilies/icon_smile_big.gif A few more range trips and it will be doing nightstand duty. http://www.ar15.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

Nice gun. I played with a friends that had a green laser on it and it was interesting. Not sure I am ready to buy one yet, but they are nice guns. The fit and finish on my friends was great.

Gun looks great!! How did the S&A magwell fit? I want to put one on my SS Gold Cup.

S&A magwell/MSH fit like a glove. Didn't need to bend or file anything.

Very nice looking! I too am looking to do the same modifications, is thumb safety replacement difficult for someone without gunsmithing experience?

I can't say since I don't know the level of your mechanical abilities. I've never taken any gunsmithing courses yet I've built AKs from Parts kits, made receivers from flats and blanks, assembled AR-15s, milled an AR reciever and changed every part out of 1911s.

The first time I fit a 1911 safety I was a bit nervous that I would screw it up so I took my time, alot of time. I just studied the stock thumb safety on where material was removed, looked at what needed to be removed from the new one by filing, fitting, filing, fitting slowly until it fit.

Now I could build a 1911 in 1 night.

Just recently I did a thumb safety, sear/hammer/disconnector combo, leaf spring, MSH, front and rear GI sights, trigger, slide stop, grips and ejector on one of my 1911s in half a day. It gets easier as you go along but just know what your competency is with doing things and go from there. Just know you can take material away but you can't put it back so take your time.

What made you decide to go with the Colt Rail? I'm trying to decide which rail to go with.

I bought my black one because it was the best Rail Gun for the money. One thing I did notice is I don't have a Pony on my slide though

Thanks for the compliments!

What made you decide to go with the Colt Rail?

After looking over several railed 1911s I chose the Colt because I have never owned a Colt, I like the looks of it, but the most important is the build quality. Despite what people say the current Colt guns are made extremely well IMO. The types people complain about are the ones made on old, out dated and worn out equipment.

My Colt Rail gun is perfectly made as in tight but not too tight fitting of the slide and the way its surfaced makes it have a good grip purchase without having a checkered front strap or grip tape.

Also for the price its hard to beat! ;)

Very nice gun. How does the rail affect balance?

I haven't noticed much of a difference compared to my RIA Government model, but I don't have a light on it yet.

You can slightly notice more weight up front but not enough to throw off the balance. With a light its obviously more front heavy like any railed gun would be with an attached light.
