1)What would be the current approximate value of a truly, NIB Series 70 Colt Lightweight Commander(Blue)that could have been made in the late 1970's or early 1980's? It is in .45 caliber! What would be the top dollar that should be paid for this gun? It is Mint, Mint, Mint!!! :scared:  :geek:

2)What about a stainless Series 80 Combat Commander(Made in 1990)in .38 super value in like new condition, in terms of it's current value? :D

3)Which would be the best gun to collect? The above Series 70, NIB Lightweight Combat Commander or a NIB, Series 70 Government Model .45 made in the late 1970's or the very early 1980's? This one is also Mint, Mint, Mint!!! :nono:

I'd say the Lightweight may be worth as much as $900, maybe more; does it have the box and manual? I looked at a lot of tired Lightweights, priced $650-$750, when I was in the market.
The S80 Combat Commander probably wouldn't be worth as much as a new one. I'd say $700?
The S70 GM probably isn't worth as much as the LW Commander, since it is much more common.
If I had $1000 burning a hole in my pocket, and I was going to buy one of the three, planning to preserve it, rather than shoot it, I'd probably get the LW.

RickB:

1)The lightweight Commander is truly NIB(Unfired)and the box and manual are with the gun in mint condition also! :p

2)If I had to pay $1,000 for this LW Commander, if I don't shoot it, is there much chance that the value would increase over a reasonable length of time-or, are these slow to appreciate in value?

3)There was a price on this LW Commander of $1,299! Would this be out of range to have to pay this amount-or? I live in Kalifornia so, I don't know if I could be able to bargain much(If any?)beyond this price? However(California or not?)I wouldn't want to get stuck for paying more than one of these NIB, LW Colt Commanders might truly be worth? Please comment-(Anyone?)? :dead_hors

I'm no gun expert, so I'm not sure how rapidly it would appreciate in value. However, as soon as you fire it one time it is no longer "NIB" and I'm sure the value would go down significantly, down to the high end of the "used" spectrum.

Living in California, you're kind of stuck in a catch-22. Guns are more rare and expensive, due to supply and demand, but if you over-pay for something, there goes any investment value. If you are looking for an investment, I'd recommend real estate. Even fairly desireable guns, like the older Commander, are not going to make you any money. $1200 is too much for a shooter, and if you did buy and then shoot, that first shot would be worth $400. We always hear about how "cheap" things used to be, and how shocking it is when we see what people pay today for what used to be "cheap", but it's all relative. That Commander probably cost $200 new, but how much money were you making in 1980? I was making $4/hr, so $200 was a lot. I can more easily afford a $1200 gun today, than a $200 gun, twenty years ago, so where's the investment value? The price goes up, but the gun isn't really worth any more.
