View Full Version : Which FP stop for Springfields?

I want to replace the Firing Pin Stop in my Springfield GI with the EGW version which has very little radius on the lower contact edge. Since 45 ACP Springfields use the 38 Super/ 9MM firing pin, I just wanted to confirm that the stop should also be for the same caliber...

You'll want a 45 firing pin stop for a 45 ACP 1911. The 9mm/38 Super stops are cut so they will clear the wider 9mm/38 Super ejectors.

The Springfield pistols also use the "Series 70" type stops...which are actually original design. Just be sure to break that sharp corner on the EGW stop.
A .075-.080 radius is ideal, but a bevel will do. Fit the stop first to the bare slide...then finish-fit with the extractor installed. On the final fit, remove material from the extractor side, and keep the sides straight and square to each other...both side-to-side and front-to-back. Sometimes the thickness also needs to be reduced. Remove material from the forward face of the stop...the one that you don't see when it's installed. If this is necessary, be sure to use a countersink or a 1/4th
inch drill bit to deburr the hole and cut a LIGHT chamfer to help the firing pin self-center and reset.

Mucho thanks to stans and the ever-present 1911T-man for the straight dope! :D

I just installed the EGW firing pin stop on my Springfield this week. I also installed a Cylinder and Slide extractor at the same time. I am no gunsmith, but it was very straight forward. All it took was a mill file. It went exactly as 1911Tuner described. I took it to the range and it functioned flawlessly. I put a 14# Wolff spring on as well. It's impossible to know for sure, but it seemed that the felt recoil was reduced, but it may be that I was shooting in 40 degree rain and was going numb.

Follow the Tuner and you can't go wrong. Yes there is less felt recoil as the slide is slowed down on the backward movement due to the small radius changing the mechanical advantage cocking the hammer and on return to battery the softer spring will help stop muzzle drop. You might try a Shock buff, I use one and the same spring and firing pin stop as you do. Even got the firing pin stop from Johny.

While sitting around and goofing off. I found the link to the pics showing the EGW stop with the necessary radius.

I can see why dat dere slide don' wanna shove back so fas' now.

When she gets installed I will go back to the 16lb recoil spring and give it the EKAAT.

Until then, I'm gonna get her stripped and blasted and then fire up the powder coat gun.....

With before and after pics, of course.... :D
