I am confused about the serial numbering on a Colt MK IV/Series 70, Government Model, 38 Super Auto. Blue book refers to C and G prefix in the serial #, but my gun has the following ( 70S 15xxx ). Any information about this serial numbering will be appreciated.
Also can anyone give me an approximate value? It is in 98% in my opinion, the only wear is along the front edge of the slide, probably holster wear. There is no rust or pitting, the grips are not original either. Other than that it is in perfect condition.

Thanks,

Joni Lynn

From: Colt's Dates of Manufacture by R.L. Wilson
Pg 37, model 1911 .38 (Commercial)
1975 started with serial #70S09051
1976 started with serial #70S20000
I guess that gives you a 1975 model.
The C prefix refers to the 45acp Commercial model with the C in front or back of the number, the G started in 1970 with serial #70G01001, also in 45acp.
I hope this helps a little.
You can sometimes tell what caliber a frame was by the serial #.
