Is there a site for stolen army issued 1911's. when you buy one from gun shows ect: can you be sure it has not been stolen some where down the line? mine dates back to 1944 and i would be real disappointed if i found out that was stolen from where ever. PAP

Some State Police websites offer a Firearms Instant Check System (FICS) to determine if a firearm has been reported lost or stolen, you may want to check with your LEO in your state. Some databases vary from local, state, to federal. The SRS, http://www.armscollectors.com/srs.htm offers a serial number search for some 1911 pistols, it is a private database derived from records and individuals, many collectors use the system for historical research, occassionally some weapons will appear there as stolen, lost, assigned to certain units, etc. Since 1911's have been sold as surplus, or brought home by old war vets, there is probably no accurate way to know for sure the status of every weapon.

One problem with SRS is that it may list a particular firearm as stolen but it might have been recovered at some point in time and SRS may not reflect this as they may not have paperwork/record of the return,so if a person has a firearm listed in the SRS data base as stolen it may still be a legal weapon to own because the recovery records never appeared for the public view/accesss. That records/data base of SRS has to be a tremendous amount of work on their part and they can't be expected to have every little record.jmy.02.
