View Full Version : On Duty with the 1911, Holsters?

I hope I don't get in trouble for posting this thread here, but I couldn't find a more applicable place to put it.

I'm in LE, so obviously I desire a handgun that has a light rail to carry a mounted light. I also happen to prefer leather holsters to any of these new kydex ones and definately don't like the nylon ones.

I've searched far and wide to find a leather holster that will carry a full size 1911 with a light mounted, and even to find one that will accept the gun without the light (I guess the integral rail is still rare enough that holster manufacturers don't have too many options).

I did find a Galco holster, I think it's called "Halo" that will handle a full size 1911 with a Surefire X300, but I don't care for how it attaches to your belt (it's just one loop and it tends to flop around, I prefer two loops to keep the firearm 'high and tight').

And I got a Wilson combat leather holster wet, plastic wrapped my gun, then stretched it out to be able to carry the gun without the light attached.

Does anyone know of any other sources available?

Since you mentioned "Duty", I take it you mean for patrol use?

If so, I don't think you'll find a good useful leather duty holster that's made for a rail gun. You'll most likely have to have one special made.

Let me clarify, for "duty", I'm actually a plain clothes officer, so I'm looking for a leather holster for plain clothes, not for a duty belt.

I had a Sig 1911 for a short time, and attempted to stretch a Galco holster since the Sig slide is wider than the standard 1911. The holster never really stretched, and the gun was always hard to get fully into and out of the holster. I'd rather stay away from the stretching, and find a good manufacterer that makes the holster for a railed gun. And again, I hate Kydex, too hard on the finish.

I have yet to find one that carry a light mounted. me thinks you'll have to coax a local maker to fix you up a custom type.

Kramer leather offers holsters for Sigs with or without rails. Not sure if they have one for use with the light attached. If I remember correctly, they do custom work as well.

Rusty Sherrick makes this one, but he's currently at a 12 month wait:

All I found for my Colt Rail Gun was the Blackhawk Serpa duty holster. This carries the rail 1911 without the light attached. Safariland makes their duty holster with a basketweave finish, available for the light mounted 1911. You may have better luck finding a belt holder for your light and carry the gun holstered without the light mounted. Good luck.
