View Full Version : What's written on the box...

Has got me a bit puzzled...

I know what's inside the box... and it is a blued finish Colt made in 1976.

So... obviously "STL" as hand written in the "FINISH" block doesn't imply "stainless".

What else could it represent?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated... :D

"Steel"?

"Steel"?

Hawkmoon,

That's exactly what I was thinking. It is a steel frame Colt.

Maybe that's what Colt's employee was thinking in 1976.

I do know that for a Colt from 1977, the box is marked "N"... and that one is a nickel plated Government Model.

I would think Steel also since Colt didn't introduce SS till 1984.

Yep, it stands for steel, my 1984 stainless steel MKIV is marked S STL, under finish.

O.K., now that we have that out of the way, where are the pictures of what is in the box? ;)

*Never mind, found them in an old thread*

Nice!

Thanks, Dakota1911 and OD*... that's good information.

Dakota, you're spot on with that date for introduction. I did see one recently, if I recall correctly, over on Collectors Firearms site. This was a pre-1984 stainless Governent Model Series 70... a prototype of sorts that was evidently released from Colt's archive collection and sold via an auction house with other Colts (a previous sale). It wasn't there last night, so I guess someone bought it.

Duckryder... I hope to get newer and better photos to follow up on what you viewed... :)

Maybe cutting and pasting in a word processor with a lack of proof reading before sending?

I would hope there are more SS mod. 70 guns from the 1983 time frame out there. I would think Colt would have worked with and tested more than one gun prior to manufacturing them for sale. I could even see prototypes that would be part SS and part blued steel or part Aluminum alloy and part SS. Hopefully they weren't destroyed.

Typo I'm sure, everything use matches the pistol.
