View Full Version : Which Officer's beavertail?

I'm starting to do a few touchups to my Oacp. I have a King's bushing which I'll fit in the next couple days. I don't like that thin stock bushing on there. I'm also looking at a beavertail in place of this duckbill I have on there. I'm leaning towards a BT with a raised pad for the palm.

I took the pistol out a few days ago to the range. It had been a long time since I've shot a compact .45 so I was giggly with awe as I tried to concentrate on technique. I did have FTfeeds on every first round of a mag, but I've cleaned up the ramps and have my new mags loaded and ready to go for next session. So far hand cycling is doing well so I hope a range session will be fine.

For those thinking I should shoot the pistol more before adding a BT and such, I've been shooting off this frame for a litle while. It also serves as the guts for my 9mm Commander top (which since I'm loving this Oacp I might find another Commander frame). I would like to get my hand higher up the grip. As it is now, it feels like the web fat on my hand is getting in the way from getting a great shooting grip.

Anyhow, if anyone has pics of their Oacp and BT, I'd appreciate it. Thanks

If you want a higher grip you'd need to go w/ a .250 radius job. I like Smith & Alexander's part's & they'll usually throw in the jig if you call them directly. A little grinder work & a lot of file work & you'll be good to go. :D

Yeah, I've sorta been eyeballing Brown's BT which also does the .250 radius and it really does offer that high grip. It makes the rear of the gun look so 'thin' though. Kinda like it you knock the tail on something it'll break off.

I'm still considering a drop-in from Wilson or King's. I still wonder if I'd regret filing to fit a beavertail or if it'd be one of those things you don't look back on, kinda like when cutting the slide for a particular set of sights.

Ah, decisions decisions.

ps..i fit my King's bushing to the barrel and halfway done fitting it t the slide. I don't have a wrench so I can't finish turning it. I'll hit my gunsmith up for one on friday I guess.

I didn't think a 9mm slide would work on a .45 frame.

Yes, it does work. 1911s are standardized as far as parts go. The caliber only matters for recoil spring (loads), breechface (slide), slide stop (if you want last shot lockback), mags, ejectors, barrel, extractor, and FP.

The hoopla you hear about 9mm not feeding in a 45 frame is just that. It isn't a given they don't work. Some do, some don't, depends on mags, bullets, frame and barrel.

Anyhow I've been shooting my 9mm 'CCO' since....mmm July-August-ish...??

The drop in beavertails do not produce as high a hold. You might still try one and see if it produces enough imporvement for you (a lot depends on habd size).
The file/grind ones are not very hard to install if you get one of the fitting jigs (I made the jigs long before I saw them for sale).
A few files and the blue colcred 'cobalt' grinding stones do an excellent job even on tougher frames. Go carefully and slowly. A heat gun and touch up blue (Oxpho works pretty well on Colt frames) produce a pretty good finish.
