Hi folks, I'm brand new here.

Have any of you heard of a 1911 leaving the factory unserialized or with no markings?

A fella has one for sale on GunsAmerica with an authentication letter by ATF. I just wonder what the historical significance would be for this and if there is a collector market. I wonder if this is what some refer to as a lunch box gun.

Thanks in advance,

Craig

That weapon has been on there for several months, and is significantly overpriced, IMO. There are some instances of weapons lacking serial numbers, and the ATF provides authentication and/or serial numbers for. As for collector or historical significance that would be up to the individual himself, I personally would rather own a weapon that has a serial number linking it to WW II production and a specific time period. From what I have seen on the collector's market, most are not that highly sought after. Most weapons referred to as "lunchbox" weapons, were the early Colt 1911 pistols that were stolen in lunchboxes in various phases of completion, and lacked serial numbers and other markings.

Thanks EW. I wondered if there was a collector market for that specific oddity to justify such a high asking price. Or if there was a reason some guns got out with sn's.
