I Have A 70' Series Colt Combat Commander 9mm In Satin Nickel. What Would Have Been The Factory Grips On This Gun? I Have Just Traded For It And It Has Pearl Grips On It Now But I Want To Make It Original Again.

Series 70 Commanders had a checkered walnut grip with a Colt medallion set in them, usually a gold medallion, but it could also have been silver. Also there were times when they used a smooth walnut grip and most of the smooth grips I have seen have the silver medallion. The checkered grips are often seen at gun shows, but the smooth grips are scarce. CDNN sells a checkered grip with a gold medallion, but the wood is Coco Bolo not walnut, that are very nice. I think they are about $24.99.

If you can date the pistol via the serial number, it would be one of the above that RandyColt mentioned. Best I can tell, they used the semi-smooth walnut w/ silver medallions up until ~1973-4. After that, the checkered walnut w/ gold medallions.
The only place (for any kind of reasonable price) that I've managed to find the former is on EBay. I picked up a pair for my 9mm CC for $23-bucks & they're perfect. Just gotta check once a week or so until a set comes up.

gunnuthunter,
RandyColt and mitchjoe are absolutely correct. My Satin Nickle Combat Commander had the smooth walnut with the silver Colt medallion. I surely wish that I still had it.... :(

I had one I bought new and it had the checkered walnut with a gold Colt medallion grips on it. After putting a couple of hundred rounds through it, I traded in on a S&W 686 back about 1986 or so, and yes, I have kicked myself for doing that.
