Hello, first post here, but have reading for some time. I posted this on the other 1911 forum also. I have a chance to buy an earily 1911, serial number is ( if I remember correctly) 298XX. I was told it dates form 1914 or so. Marked "Model 1911 US Army" on right side. weapon is blued but does not appear to be refinished, however someone scribed their licence number on the bottem of the trigger guard. Has the wide spur hammer and flat mainspring housing and ugly rubber pac grips. Guy wants $ 450.00. I know this is not a lot of information and I do not have pictures. Thank you for any information or guidance you can pass along.

You pretty much can't go wrong for an original finish, functioning USGI 1911.

Grab it now! You can sand off (by hand with wet/dry 600) the engraving on the trigger guard and cold blue it. Sounds like all you need then is a pair of double-diamond walnut grips. The bottom of the trigger guard is the one place on the gun where you can do most anything; its easy, accessible, small and usually the last place anybody looks. If the gun has most of its original finish, including the engraved area, you may want to consult some experienced people before taking off the numbers - it may be better to leave it alone in this case. This pistol could be the best deal you get all year.

Buy it! You'd get more for that in parts alone. The damage sounds fixable, and you could end up with a nice weapon.
