ARE there such critters? I seem to recall an article on one (expensive) that was so tough you could pound the "glass" all day with a bat and not get it and had a NICE facade but was very secure.

I sure have not seen anything like you are looking for. I have seen ads for supposedly secure but beautiful rifle display cases but their prices have been 6-7 thousand. For pistols, I'd think the 'glass' would have to be Lexan about 1/4" thick - I had that on hatches on my ocean capable boat -- but in a frame of oak about 2" thick - and then the whole thing bolted to something really heavy!
Good luck!

I have a relative who makes custom furniture. REALLY high quality heirloom stuff like hand carved sleigh beds and cabinetry. Hmmmmm. This may be a ready-made market. Nothing like doing something you love right?

Unlike the display cases in most gunstores that have the notes to not lean on the glass.

the glass has to be bullet proof i guess. I would like that also ;)

That is why I mentioned Lexan - it is bullet proof. However, it is not scratch proof. But I think it is still made in two versions - one has had a surface hardening process applied to it which will make it more scratch-proof. For a gun cabinet I would think either type would be perfect. On my boat we even walked on the hatches that had Lexan 'glass'.
