My grandfather gave me an unfired Ithaca 1911 45 ACP he picked up about 1946.

I have never shot it ( I have some other "shooter" 1911s for plinking). Will this gun ever be valuable, or are there so many 1911s out there that it will be a conversation piece only?

I would think that the Colts would be worth more than the Ithaca, since it is a more well known name. I oil it every so often and try not to work the action much when cleaning it...want to preserve the unfired appearance.

Thanks

WT: If you really want to find out what it's worth, take some good photos and list it on one of the gun auction sites. ;)
Seriously... if the pistol is as you describe, it is already valuable. Yes, Colt's generally bring more than most Ithacas. But the value af any collectible piece is determined by originality, condition and which specific variation (among many) it actually is.
By providing some specific information and posting some good detailed photos here, I think you'll be able to find out rather quickly what you have and it's value (without having to list it on an auction  ).

As Scott said, your ithaca is already probably worth a bit, To be honest I think that posting pictures here is probably one of the safest ways to get an idea of the value, These guys are all honest, This site is your best bet on getting the real info on values, and God forbid, assistance with a malfunctioning gun
