Ok, Other handguns I've owned accepted the magazine with a gentle push and clicked in without my having to push the magazine release button.
My Colt Defender seems to require the pushing of the magazine release button to allow insertion.
Is this the way it is or would it be ok to give it a good hearty shove without pushing the button?

Thanks in advance...

ArmyCop, I had the same issue with my 1991A1. After removing the mag release, we found that the factory spring was too long by about two coils. You might try comparing it to a new spring. Otherwise, the release might need to be polished.

Are you using the same mags?

Some releases have sharp ramps on them, either polish it a bit, or slam them home..........wont hurt anything.

Is the Colt new? It could be the mag release is working too good. After break in I would imagine it should get easier. If not disassemble and checking it out would be in order. It would not hurt to check it out now but if it is a break in issue there would not be much you could do besides some light stoning which is basically speeding up break in. What sort of mag are you using? Have you tried this with a couple different mags with the same results? It could also be a issue with a ceratin mag or two.

Sounds pretty typical to me. Just firmly install the magazine. The base plate prevents over-insertion. I have a 52 year old gov model that still is the same way.

After twenty years my Commander still needs its mags sent home with authority. As I carry concealed My regular carry mag has no rubber base pad. This helps reduce the profile. The extra mags all have the rubber base pads, this little extra sticking out of the bottom helps seat them properly.
