Hello. I was hoping to get some info on this 1918 Colt, No. 2282XX I recently gave $450 for. The "US Property" appears to have been ground off (completely. No trace of it remains except a small groove which can only be seen under magnification) at some point in time, but other than that all markings are intact. The grips I don't believe are original, simply because they are in such new condition. Is there anyone who can restore the US Property (also how much would that run)?

USP stamps can be engraved; one price I've seen is $1.50 per letter but that was some time ago. I think your "groove" would have to be filled in first, which means another refinish.
It looks like at least the front sight has been replaced with an A1 style and I also think those are reproduction grips. I don't think you got hurt at $450, especially if the barrel is correct.

This is a wild card thought, but Caspian Arms sells new manufacture frames with the "US Property" stamp as an option. It would only cost you the phone call to give them a shout and ask if they would stamp your frame if you send it to them.
www.caspianarms.com I believe.
If that doesn't work, see if you can track down Doug Turnbull.

It looks like you have an early, short hammer on your gun. Not correct for the serial number range, but much better for shooting.

You might contact Bill Adair, he's done two USGIs for me.

The left grip has been modified or broken off at the top. It also appears the grips have been laquered. Original Colt grips will have 15 rows of checkering +/- 1 between the large diamonds.

I talked to a well known engraver at the Tulsa Arms Show this weekend. He said cost depends upon the font and the hardness of the steel; between $7 and $15 dollars per letter. He estimated $7 for a USP mark. He said Winchester roll marks cost the most due to the steel and the flowing script.
