FTF 1st round

I took my DW Dave Pruitt to the range last night and now exhibiting failure to feed the first round. I was using 230 gr CCI Independence .45 acp FMJ. My mags are 4 Wilson, 2 SS Metalform with round top follower, and the DW blue 7 rd mag. All mags did the same thing. The round just slams against the feed ramp thereby pushing the head in the shell. 2 weeks ago I used WWB and no problems. Could it be the CCI Independence? Method of loading is the slingshot method.

The first thing i did when i have my new gun is to check its reliability of feeding.
The first thing i do (note:all was done in extreme care/caution and yet better done using dummy round) is load the mag with 8 shells (live) insert it in the gun and try to cock (slide) it. too bad it doesn't feed at all- round slams its head on the ramp. Then i try to only put a single shell on on mag...and cock it (slide) then it feeds a-ok. Then i conclude that its the magazine, it gives too much tension pushing the shell, since it is new. I leave my mags with 8 shells on it for about a week. Then after that i tried to load it in my gun and cock it and its ok. I cock it again till there is no more bullet left in the clip- everything was fine. Another couple of weeks i went to the range and i fired 80 rounds and its flawless!

I don't think its the ammo. (unless u don't use the specified ammo by the gun manufacturer)

BTW, what do you mean by sling shot method?

If this is happening on the first round with a variety of magazines I would suggest that the extractor has too much tension.

If other brands of ammo work fine, I would suggest it is this particular brand of ammo. CCI uses and plated lead bullet instead of a traditional jacketed bullet. It could be that the plated bullet is soft enough that it deforms and jams on the feed ramp.

I would try the WWB again or another type of ammo before anything else. I've had no problems with the Independence in my DW's, but as we all know, each pistol is different and can be particular.

These guns are tight and I have experienced the same problem. The simple solution is to vigorously rack the slide and let it slam forward for the first round. 90% of the time this solves the problem. I would bet monethat this will solve your problems since you don't mention any problems but the first round. Over time things will loosen up.

That is the proper way to load the 1911 (and just about any other semi-auto pistol). Riding the slide (keeping your hand on the slide) while reloading takes away the slides momentum and can induce a feed jam. Just don't let the slide slam home on an empty chamber.
